During the 1920’s, Roberto Mares Sr. and his family left Mexico due to the Cristero Revolution and fled to the U.S. during Prohibition. With Prohibition came great opportunity. Mares harvested the local blue agave, fermented and distilled it, and then drove to the speakeasies of San Diego and Los Angeles, selling his Tequila to support their family.
The Bad Stuff™ Extra Anejo Tequila is crafted from the finest estates grown tequilana weber blue agave. Our agave is hand selected by our Jimador, then slow baked in traditional steam ovens until they reach a rich caramelization. The rich agave nectar is fermented with a combination of pure artesian water from our onsite wells. We then double distill this rich fermented mosto, first in stainless alembics, with the final distillation being completed in a copper alembic (Pot Still). Our rich peppery, spice ladened Blanco is then poured into our Virgin French Oak barrels and allowed to repose for a minimum of three years.
Felipe Soto Mares & Darren Enenstein
Felipe started distilling small batches of tequila for family and friends in 1994 at his uncle’s ranch in Jalisco, Mexico but his family tradition of making tequila dates back two generations.
Darren, a serial entrepreneur with a love for car racing, teamed up with Felipe in 2017 and have broadened their circle of loyal Amigos who enjoy The Bad Stuff, in addition to paving the way for new products including a Reposado, Blanco, and even a 12 year tequila!
Felipe and Darren not only share The Bad Stuff with Amigos in numerous states, but also enjoy sharing The Bad Stuff lifestyle through photos and events involving racing, surfing, sailing, and adventure.

Long before the big chain coffee houses moved here, a little coffee house – not much more than a stand opened up in Restaurant Row. It had one employee and limited hours. Soon the place was hopping and locals were lining up to order drinks not usually found outside of Seattle, at the little coffee house, then known as Mocha Marketplace.
Fast forward thru the years, several remodels/expansions and a name change to Old California Coffee House & Eatery, the once little coffee house now has about a dozen full-time employees, lots of seating, and is open for 13+ hours each day, seven days a week.
A lot has changed over the years, but we still remain committed to providing the finest quality locally roasted coffees and ingredients that we always have. We’ve added a more diverse café food menu with a few “vegetarian” and “vegan” selections. The comfort of sofas and chairs to lounge in, access to free wireless internet and board/card games, Old Cal Coffee has become a huge draw for business professionals and students alike. Nightly, we light the fire pits for cozy gatherings!
Our Goals include being a haven from the hard, sterile cookie-cutter atmosphere of the corporate coffee house and offer a respite from the hectic, frenzied pace of life. We strive to preserve the legacy of the coffee house as a place of community – a place to meet friends, hang out and relax, have stimulating conversations, listen to music, read, study, draw, write poetry, meet with business associates, enjoy the local flavor, while providing great food, coffee and gelato.

Tucked away in San Marcos, Dos Desperados Brewery is a family-owned and operated brewery dedicated to crafting, pouring, and serving crowd favorites and specialty brews. It all began over 20 years ago when Dos Desperado’s founder, Steve Munson, got the brewing bug. His first brew was a Mexican style ale and was such a hit at his backyard cookouts that he could no longer keep up the demand brewing in his family home. That is when Steve decided it was time to turn his favorite hobby into a business. In 2014 Dos Desperados was born. Dos Desperados or “the Rebel in all of us” perfectly represents Steve’s adventurous brews– Habeerneros IPA, double Dealer Brown Ale, and Homicidal Manic Stout– just to name a few.
Steve passed on his head honcho hat to Hayden Weir, a CSUSM grad, in 2018. Hayden is now Dos Desperados Head Brewer and is whipping up delicious beers like his famous New England-style IPA named Hazy Daisy (after his golden retriever pup, Daisy).
And it’s a family affair! On any day of the week, you will find one of the Munson family members serving up these delicious suds. So saddle up and come try a beer (or two) at San Marcos’ very own drinking hole.
